My Approach

Chronic illnesses impact individuals, their caregivers, families, and friends. Drawing on over 30 years of experience in the mental health field, I offer support, health education, and counselling tailored to the needs of each client. I bring three consistent values to my counselling relationships.

Experience has taught me to be integrative. Medical and psychiatric diagnoses are useful to guide practice, but the counselling process starts and ends with a good relationship and knowledge of the unique experiences, skills, limitations, and resources of each client.

CONNECTION

Motivation to change can be hampered by life stressors, restricted access to support, and physical or mental limitations. I draw on the benefits of motivational interviewing to shape personal goals and to address barriers impacting them. Small changes can have a huge impact over time. Lifelong, each of us continues to develop, often learning from our mistakes and suffering.

GROWTH

Balance is the key to health. We can forget to address our body-based experiences when encountering emotions and stress. There is healing power in the connections made between the body, heart, and mind. Counselling allows for safe integration between all three domains.

BALANCE

Authenticity. Wisdom. Whole-heartedness.

The youngest of three siblings, I have inhabited roles of family observer and mediator, harnessing my ability to empathize and share emotions. Growing up, I continued with a caring approach in most endeavours. As a result, my emotional ‘gate’ has often been left wide-open. While this has produced important insights, it has also led to vulnerability. My personal growth has included work balancing the needs of others with self care. Making time for counselling in a busy life is a powerful gesture that supports self worth and healing.

I have over 32 years experience in the mental health field, working as a nurse in multiple settings, including in-patient psychiatry wards and community-based services for adults of all ages. Health education has always been an interest of mine. After attaining a Master of Nursing in 2002, I became a classroom and clinical nurse educator. In 2015, I started learning fundamentals of Integrative Energy Healing at Langara College, which deepened my understanding of body-based work and the power of non-verbal processes affecting health. Between 2016 and 2018, I worked as a nurse with BC Women’s Hospital Sexual Assault Services. I pursued another dream to become a counsellor, graduating with a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology in 2019, after a ten-month practicum in residential substance abuse treatment.

With a broad base of life and work experiences, including parenting of a child with developmental disorders, I counsel people living with loss, trauma, mood imbalance, and anxiety. My specialties involve work with chronic health conditions, such as Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis, head injuries, dementias, Schizophrenia, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, heart and lung diseases, chronic fatigue/pain syndromes, and functional neurological disorders.

Personal Stuff

As an extrovert, I keep busy with friends and family. Movement helps me process emotions, it lowers pain from my arthritis, and helps with my heart condition. I commute by bike and continue a history of martial arts training that started in 1988, currently practicing Wing Chun. Recently, I started dance classes which bring immense joy!
